Exhibiting Nutopia offers the artists of Raw Art Forum the opportunity to show their first collaborative installation piece. The four artists have worked closely together over the past year and it is from such collaboration that ‘Nutopia’ has evolved.
Nutopia was to be an imaginary company fulfilling the expectations of people who want everything and more. It was to investigate the obsessive nature of 21st century consumerism.
This first piece is one that has surprised them, inasmuch that it bears little or no resemblance to their own work - it has its roots in every day consumerism, within which they have created their own ‘medicinal’ product models - their mutual sense of fun has informed this particular collaboration; humour seemingly connect things. They investigate the every day - small things that may, or may not, affect us all. Specifically, this particular work is concerned with expressing personal irritations and exasperations, whilst alluding to trends in modern consumerism, where anything can be marketed where a need is created.
The Nutopia installation consists of eleven elements each made up of individual items housed in white display units mounted on cardboard delivery boxes. The artists of Raw Art Forum have created and produced all aspects of the installation, from graphics, design and printing of labels, to the creation of the display units and delivery boxes.
In addition to the primary installation the artists have produces a suite of nine prints which are presented as a complementary piece to be shown alongside the installation. The prints are based on the original graphics used on the installation labels, and are printed on an Epson SC800 professional printer using Epson archival photo paper and Epson Ultrachrome HD inks.
’Nutopia’ has surprised them - as stated earlier it bears little resemblance to their individual work, but it is most certainly ‘of them’ and as such complements what they have already achieved in their individual practices. Nutopia has been shown at Artizan Gallery Torquay throughout May 2018 and will then move on to Totnes Birdwood Gallery in July. It is envisaged that Nutopia will tour various venues over the coming year.
